Our local U3A Philosophy Group is a welcoming and stimulating space for anyone keen to explore the big questions of life in the company of curious minds. Whether you're a seasoned thinker or simply someone who enjoys meaningful conversation, we invite you to join us as we delve into the ideas that have shaped—and continue to shape—our world.  Everyone is welcome, no matter how much you know – you will find you know more than you realise!

A stack of philosophy books

We meet fortnightly to reflect and discuss a wide range of philosophical topics, from classical thinkers like Plato and Aristotle to contemporary voices such as Mary Midgley and Richard Dawkins. Discussions are informal and inclusive, grounded in mutual respect and a shared enthusiasm for learning. You don’t need any background in philosophy—just an open mind and a willingness to engage.

As Socrates famously said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” At our meetings, we aim to examine life in all its complexity—human behaviour, ethics, belief, society, and beyond—while also enjoying a good laugh, a hot drink and a biscuit.

Our philosophy isn’t about finding final answers, but about exploring ideas and the richness of different perspectives. As Simone de Beauvoir wrote, “Change your life today. Don’t gamble on the future, act now, without delay.” What better way to live in the present than to think more deeply about it, together?

Come and share your thoughts, your questions, and your company. We look forward to welcoming you. You can find some useful sources of further reading in this document.
