Padel is a fast-growing (and often addictive) racquet sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, but is less physically demanding. It is easy to learn, suitable for all ages and abilities and highly sociable.
The game is played in doubles format with a solid racquet using low-compression tennis balls. The court is similar to an indoor tennis court but with glass walls which can be used for tactical play. Scoring is similar to in tennis, though the ball is bounced for a more gentle underarm serve.
With the recent opening of new indoor Padel courts in Yate, we are planning a new Yate & Sodbury u3a Padel group to start in September 2026.
Full details are to be confirmed, depending on the level of interest, but we're probably looking at playing for a 90 minute afternoon session once per week at the new Future Padel courts just off Armstrong Way in Yate. Costs will depend on the number of players and the format. Equipment can be hired or purchased from the Padel centre, the only requirement is suitable court shoes.
The new Padel centre is currently running regular one-hour "Introduction To Padel" coaching sessions for anyone new to the sport who wants to just give it a try (usually £5 for one hour) and we can arrange these for u3a members during August if needed.
We already have a waiting list. If you're interested in joining or want to give Padel a try, please contact Kevin Kemp via the link above and ask to be added to the waiting list - please indicate your level of interest and details of previous racquet sport or Padel experience.
