The aim of this group will be to look at how languages have developed and the factors that lead to changes in them. Special attention will be given to English, but participants with knowledge of how other languages have developed and changed will also be welcome to contribute insights into their change and development.

I stress that language has long been a hobby of mine but I am not a professional linguist as such. Naturally as a teacher of History I have had an interest in the social history of the development of English, and, to a lesser extent that of French and German.

The group meets at the Group Leader's home.
